Yelena Belova Is Asexual In The Comics: Know More About Her

Yelena Belova has made her debut in cinemas with the standalone Black Widow film released earlier this month. Played by Florence Pugh, Belova’s character was well received and loved both by critics and fans. However, there are many unexplored categories of Belova’s character even after her debut to mainstream audiences. One such detail is Yelena Belova’s sexuality.

Yelena’s character has a lot of similarities as well as differences when it comes to Natasha Romanoff. When we first meet her in Black Widow, we see that she is younger and rash at times.

“She considers Black Widow a mantle more than a person and one that Natasha no longer deserves,” said Devin Grayson, who co-wrote Black Widow.

In an interview posted on the official Marvel website, writer Devin Grayson explored many themes of the movie, including Yelena’s sexuality and character as a whole. Grayson stated that the younger Russian is “more likely to identify as asexual.”

So Yelena Belova’s sexuality? Asexual. Aside from the comments made by Grayson, Yelena’s asexuality has been hinted at in the comics. But this side of her has never been explored in mainstream media. But according to Grayson, “Yelena has made use of choices that weren’t initially available to Nat.”

Many asexual fans from the LGBTQ+ community have backed up this aspect of Yelena Belova. They have also mentioned that they hope to see her sexual orientation and identity further explored in MCU in the future.

Yelena And Natasha Differences

The writer also mentioned that Yelena has more agency as compared to Natasha. She is younger, freer, and made use of this in her daily life choices. “In my mind, Natasha is indelibly connected to the Soviet Union and the Cold War, and Yelena is not,” the writer revealed.

“Yelena is a child of perestroika and glasnost and unification, a patriotic Russian moving through the world without the hang-ups of Stalinism. She is, in other words, loyal by choice, as opposed to Natasha, who was loyal by indoctrination and so subsequently—perhaps inevitably—revised her primary allegiance,” he further stated.
