Longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg has revealed how he thinks a team of mutant heroes should join the MCU.

After serving as a writer and producer on X-Men: Apocalypse, Kinberg was promoted to Dark Phoenix – which has been rumoured by fans of the cinematic X-Men franchise since 2000. Now, he gave his own opinions on what should happen next.

Discussing mutants at MCU, Kinberg told IGN how to explore the scientific aspects of X-Men. “MCU works so well, and as a fellow filmmaker and then just as a fan, I have very deep respect. He’s really loyal to comics,” Kinberg said.

“They are not afraid of a more supernatural or science fiction tone for their films,” he elaborates. “They don’t think they should be grounded in some kind of physics-based reality. I think there’s something very big and liberating and wonderful about it. I think the X-Men can be very cool if you bring up the science fiction elements and the X-Men aspects of the Earth. I would love to see it as a fan.”

Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy has begun a trend of realistic superhero films. Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four tried the grim approach with the critically-acclaimed film of 2015, but according to Kinberg, the MCU should explore the outside elements of X-Men comics. The X-Men has a long and complex history with the universe and is no stranger to scientific aspects.

For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the largely underlying days of Phase 1 have given way to far-reaching science fiction and space adventures. In addition to threats like Thanos and the galaxy’s search for the Infinity Stones, films including Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel have explored the stars. There are references to the entire cosmic branch of the MCU, and the 4th phase of the franchise includes more intergalactic stories with The Eternals.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has promised that he has plans for X-Men at MCU, but for now, Kinberg and everyone else is wondering how and when the mutants will be introduced.
