Why Does Tjaden From ‘All Quit On The Western Front’ Stab Himself?

‘All Quite On The Western Front ‘ on Netflix is a heartbreaking movie about the harsh reality of war. It is already said to be one of the greatest war movies of this time. It showcases all of the things, emotions, and hardships a soldier goes through during the war. 

Tjaden Slackfeet is one of the characters, whose hardships are shown. In the movie, Tjaden reveals that he wants to become a military policeman. He believed that a military policeman is everyone’s friend. He desired the life of a military policeman and even planned on applying for it.

In the second half of the movie, during the war, Tjaden gets injured, he gets shot in the leg. He gets shot twice, one bullet hits right in his knee and the other one right below. Which made him afraid that his leg would have to be amputated. He got worried that he wouldn’t make it as a military policeman if his leg got amputated. 

When Stanislaus Katczinsky and Paul bring him food, he asks if they brought any cutlery to eat it with. When Paul and Kat aren’t looking, he takes the fork and stabs himself in the neck, which causes him to die.

Before dying, he tells that it is over for him. He felt that he didn’t want to live a life if he wasn’t a military policeman, and now that his leg was going to be amputated, he would have no chance of being one.
