Violet Evergarden: The Movie has crossed 2 billion yen (around $19.2 million USD) in earnings in the Japanese box office, and has sold 1,397,440 tickets so far. Oricon reported these numbers here. This is the second movie produced by Kyoto Animation to do so, after A Silent Voice in 2016. It is now the eighth highest-grossing animated movie in 2020 worldwide, right after Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna

The movie released on September 18 this year and had been in the top 10 for 11 weeks, before finally falling off in its 12th week. It had ranked second in its opening weekend.

More theatres screening the movie would be added on December 11, following the successful run of the film so far.

The official Twitter account of the Violet Evergarden series posted a tweet expressing their gratitude for the amount of love that fans have shown the movie:

The 140-minute movie, directed by Taichi Ishidate, is Kyoto Animation’s first release since the arson attack on their Studio 1 building in 2019 which claimed 36 lives. The plot is a continuation of the anime series of the same name and jumps between two different time periods—orphan Violet Evergarden, who had been brought up in the army as a soldier after being taken in by Major Gilbert. After the war, she begins working as “Auto Memory Doll“, amanuenses that transcribe people’s thoughts and feelings into words on paper at CH Postal Company; and a young lady who finds the letters that her grandmother had received from her great-grandmother.

Moviegoers do not have to watch the anime series (which is now on Netflix) to be able to understand the film— it has a wholesome story, and is captivating both emotionally and visually. Additionally, the film spends the first 30 minutes recapping iconic scenes from the series—which explains its longer running time.
