The manga is set in the summer of 1944 during the Battle of Peleliu, a battle that went on for months between the U.S. and Japan in World War II. Tamaru is the main protagonist who dreams of becoming a manga artist but he ends up as a soldier in the war due to the enlistment program.

Tamaru’s daily life on the island is intricately shown as he and his comrades face bombings by the U.S. army troops. And the series also explores the soldier’s thoughts and wishes as they camp out on an island so far way from home.

Is this Series Worth Getting Excited About?

Definitely! This is a wonderful series that beautifully tackles difficult themes including war and the hollowness of glory in such mass suffering. The series makes no secret of portraying the reality and evils of war.

The name of the series, Peleliu is based off of the island of Peleliu. This beautiful coral island stands proof to its history of the bloodbath that the battle of Peleliu was.

This manga series was nominated for this year’s 25th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. It also won an award in 2017 at the 46th Japan Cartoonist Awards.

Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise is certainly worth getting into as it will make you more aware of a historical war that took place in the past. The art style is really simple and cute looking which highlights its contrast with the serious plot even more and makes us pay attention.
