Marvel Continuing Down Comedy Road on Disney+

Destin-Daniel-Cretton

Marvel Studios is working constantly to expand its on-screen universe with theatrical releases and Disney+ series alike, an effort that will bring nine new entries to the MCU by the end of 2021. As has been the case since the MCU began back in 2008 with Iron Man, many of these projects have had a comedic aspect to them, although some clearly have more room for laughs than others.

Most recently, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton secured his future with Marvel Studios and is now set to develop multiple properties for the MCU, including a sequel to Shang-Chi, in the next few years. He’s even working on a Disney+ series at this very moment, and now, fans have the first sense of what to expect to see in that outing.

Variety followed up on that report by revealing that Cretton’s first Disney+ project would be a comedy, although no other details were confirmed.

Of course, being an MCU project, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings had some comedic aspects utilized in its plot, particularly with Awkwafina’s Katy and her friendship with Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi. The big question now is what specific project Cretton will bring to life on Disney+ that goes full comedy.

Marvel Studios is no stranger to bringing additions into the MCU that utilize comedy as a main focus. Phase 4 alone will bring the funny antics of Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk as she calls out Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and breaks the fourth wall in other ways, and fans are already looking forward to seeing Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool unleash his own round of hilarity in Deadpool 3.

Although Cretton is confirmed to be developing Shang-Chi’s world further following his success with the 2021 solo movie, he could end up moving to different franchises and characters for this reportedly funny MCU entry. No matter what that turns out to be, this should only be the first of many new additions to Marvel Studios’ growing story as he brings new ideas to the forefront.

Cretton’s first MCU project, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is now available to stream on Disney+.
