Obanai has revealed in the manga that he loves Mitsuri deeply. For him, it was love at first sight, when he saw her standing under a sakura tree. He believes he is unable to tell her, but this is due to his “filthy blood,” which he attributes to prior trauma.

He makes a lot of gifts to her, like food or even the regular green socks she wears with her uniform, to show his appreciation. Despite the fact that she is the Love Hashira, she is oblivious of his crush, resulting in his love being unrequited. They also write to one other on a regular basis.

She is concerned that she was ultimately ineffective, but he assures her that no one would say anything negative about her. Matsuri admits that she adores him and that the meals she shared with him were the greatest she has ever had.

She also claims that he has always looked at her with such tenderness, and she requests that if they are resurrected as humans, he accept her as his wife. Obanai responds that it’s alright if she’s with someone like him.
