About the anime
Kaiju No 8 (English: Monster #8), is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto. In the anime, the Japanese people are attacked by Kaiju monsters, and the Japanese Defense Force is entrusted with eliminating them. The protagonists are Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro, who pledged to join the Defense Force after their town was destroyed by kaiju when they were children.

The chapter opened with Ogata remembering his friend Hikari who was selected for Kaiju No 4’s compatibility test. He regrets not stopping her during that time. Meanwhile, in the present, Reno has successfully taken down the honju. Seeing everybody cheer with joy makes Ogata breaks down for not having helped his friend when it counted the most.
Ogata then composes himself and informs Reno that he passed. Touko asked him whether he was sure about this decision and despite his earlier reservations, he tells Touko that he is sure.
Back in Tachikawa Base, Ogata is in a phone call with Ashiro talking about Reno Ichikawa. He reaffirms to Ashiro that Reno is worthy of wearing No. 6. Ogata further adds that as a survivor, he will carry out his duty by teaching them everything he can. He informs Ashiro that he will turn them into soldiers that’ll take her breath away.
