The release of What If…? draws near and we’re excited to know more about the show every day. Back in December 2019, Marvel’s President Kevin Feige revealed the number of episodes in What If..?. However, this announcement has also seemed to have changed with time.
Feige initially said that Season 1 of the animated series would consist of 10 episodes in the first season. He further mentioned that a second season of the show was already in the pre-production stage. Feige added that the second season would also consist of 10 in total.
But soon after his announcement, the COVID-19 pandemic took over the world and changed plans for everything and everyone, including the projects in Hollywood. Therefore, this resulted in a disruption of production in What If..?
Number Of Episodes In What If…? Revealed
According to the animated series’ executive producer Brad Winderbaum, the original plan to release 10 episodes for both seasons has now been changed. In an interview with Collider after the COVID-19 pandemic, Winderbaum revealed that the pandemic has forced the Marvel series to be reassessed.
“We had to push an episode into Season 2. It was just, honestly, like everything else, that was a COVID impact,” the producer said. However, he did confirm that the plan for the show to have a second season did not change although the number of episodes in What If…? also changed for Season 2.
“There was an episode that just wouldn’t hit the completion date, but luckily we do get to see it in the second season of the show,” said Winderbaum. He said that “Season 2 will also be 9,” and thereby confirmed that there will be 18 episodes in total.
Each episode of What If…? is targeted to be about half an hour long each. “We targeted a half an hour for each episode. Some of them come in a little longer, some of them come in a little shorter,” said Winderbaum. He also mentioned that with a total of nine episodes, the creators will tell as many stories as they can.
