The classic 2D action arcade game, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, is now coming to the Nintendo Switch. Capcom, the Japanese game developer and publisher, has announced its reboot at The Game Awards on Thursday, called Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection. It is scheduled for release on February 25, 2021.

An announcement trailer was also released:

The trailer shows the series hero Arthur, who is a knight, battling familiar enemies like Skeleton Murderer, Pigman, and Red Arremer, from both the original 1985 game and its sequel, Ghouls ‘n Goblins, in the Demon Realm. The artwork for these familiar foes, however, is very different and seems to be inspired by medieval art, with Capcom aiming for a “storybook-like” visual style. In terms of gameplay, this reboot is sticking with the classic 2D side-scrolling.

Capcom describes the game:

Ghosts-'n-Goblins

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection is a nostalgic, yet fresh adventure that welcomes back its faithful fans, while introduces a new generation of heroes to challenge one of gaming’s classic series.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins, ever since it hit the arcades back in 1985, has been notorious for its difficulty. This reboot promises the same—if the number of times that Arthur dies in the trailer is anything to go by.

In early November this year, there was a massive Capcom leak which revealed the company’s game release plans for the next four years—including a new project called Resident Evil Outrage, a Resident Evil 8-style multiplayer game, a new Ace Attorney collection for the Playstation 4 and Switch, and Street Fighter 6 in the latter half of 2022. The reboot news was part of this leak, with people speculating that a game codenamed “Guillotine” would be a new addition to the series.

Capcom has also announced Capcom Arcade Stadium, which will be coming to Switch as a free download in February 2021. This will be a compilation of 32 arcade classics, including the original Ghosts ‘n Goblins, 1942, Section Z, and Forgotten Worlds. These titles will be available as paid DLC bundles.
