Van Hohenheim is based on a real person

Van Hoenheim left his children when they were young and did not come back until ten years later. However, later we learn that he is a 451-year-old alchemist who is a living Philosopher’s Stone.

In addition, he is based on a Swiss physician and alchemist named Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim.

Realism

Although the series takes place in a fictional alternate reality, the writer did extensive research to make the details as accurate as possible.

For instance, Riza Hawkeye carries a Karabiner 98K sniper rifle along with two FN Model 1910s.

Symbolism

The series includes tons of strange symbols that surprisingly have real meaning behind them.

For example, the tree shown in Edward’s Gate of Truth is known as the Sephirothic Tree of Life. Additionally, the circles on the picture represent the multiple truths shown to humanity. Besides that, the tree is upside down depicting the various ways truth can be seen.

Winry’s piercings

Eagle-eyed fans of the series must have noticed that Winry has four piercings on each ear. Besides that, it consists of two hoops and two studs.

Meanwhile, the reason behind her piercings is revealed during the OVA#1 of the anime series which is titled, ‘Simple People.’

It shows that Ed and Al seemingly bought two pairs of silver earrings for Winry since she recently had her ears pierced.
