Edens Zero is a Japanese manga series by Hiro Mashima, the author of Rave Master, Monster Soul and Fairy Tail, which debuted in the Weekly Shonen Magazine on June 27th, 2018 in Japan.

Shiki is a human who lives in a city filled with only robots. He has lived on Granbell for most of his life after being taken in by the Demon King robot, who became his grandfather figure.

Now he does repairs for the robots in the park. But the robots then strangely turn against Shiki to force him to leave the planet with Rebecca in order to fulfil their promise to the Demon King, who knew Shiki was destined for greatness. With the ancient powers of Ether Gear, Shiki begins his journey into space, where dragons roam the stars!

Recap of Edens Zero Chapter 186

The main four encounter Ziggy’s Four Dark Stars, and after Pino’s investigation, the crew realises that they are superior to their counterparts, the Four Shinning Stars, in every way; yet, they prepare to obliterate their opponents, but not before a brief discussion about what it is to have a heart.

Before we can have a 4v4 match, Killer (Brain of Edens) isolates each player and their opponent into their own combat zone. Weisz and Killer are the first two we meet, with Weisz announcing himself as the “Flame of Edens” (which is great) and Killer announcing that he’ll be murdering him. So far, everything has gone well.

Following that, we see Rebecca and Clown (Clown of Edens?) clashing at a circus, with Pino and Happy imprisoned in a small cage. Wizard is Shiki’s opponent, and he transports him to Granbell, combining all of his deceased companions and impersonating Michael (bowling moment #1). Finally, at the Coliseum Arena, we have Homura vs. Brigandine, with the Dark Star especially eager to meet a human who assumes the role of a machine.

Returning to the remainder of the crew, the struggle against Deadend Crow intensifies, and because he is a genuine fortress, causing damage with the starfighters is futile. Hermit allows Holy to ride another Knightgear, the Steel Sorceress 94 (bowling moment #2), to personally fight Crow. That should work out well. Returning to Shiki vs. Wizard, Shiki quickly realises that everything is a ruse concocted by Wizard to fool him. Wizard shifts to an illusion of Witch to further destabilise Shiki, plainly alarming the Demon King. But, despite being visibly shaken, Shiki follows his heart and emails the truth – the woman in front of him is not a witch – and so begins on the attack.

Spoilers for Edens Zero Chapter 187

Rebecca has incorporated Cat Leaper’s speed into fighting while jumping to the next world or reversing. It’ll be interesting to see what she can do now that she’s unlocked Overdrive.

Weisz too has unlocked Overdrive and though we have not seen most of its capabilities, from the snippet from his fight with Nasse, its bet to assume that he uses it more to incorporate his usage of firearms into combat. Plus we could see an update to the Arsenal Suit! And since we’re all 100% confident about Weisz’s abilities, it should be fun to see what the now proclaimed “Flame of Edens” has learnt in those three years.

In this chapter, there was a lot of discussion on what it means to have a heart, and who knows, Brigandine’s curiosity could lead him to a new understanding of human-machine coexistence. On a more personal level for Homura, the motif here appears to be their shared relationship with Valkyrie.

Thus it’ll be fascinating to watch how Homura handles her role as the Sword of Edens as a successor to her Mother and Mentor’s will. Homura’s battles are usually some of the greatest, and despite her recent lack of panel time, it’s best to trust Mashima-sensei to handle this brilliantly — ending with Kitsune Overdrive Homura cutting Brigandine to bits.
