Did Marvel Seriously Just Kill a Guardian of The Galaxy?

The Guardians of the Galaxy have been given a new life in Marvel’s movie universe. If the Avengers are Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy are the galaxy’s dysfunctional family.

But at the end of the day, this dysfunctional family is a team of heroes.

While Thor took us to Asgard, the Guardians take us deep into the cosmos. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 5 #4 ended with Star-Lord cradled in the arms of Gamora, gravely wounded and possibly dead.

The Twist

A week ago, Marvel Comics announced that an upcoming arc of the Guardians of the Galaxy series will be titled “The Death of Rocket Raccoon.” This time again Donny Cates kills a Guardian’s Superhero.

When the news first broke that Marvel was rebooting the Guardians of the Galaxy, it seemed a useful twist of fate.

Still, the fate of the Guardians movies seemed uncertain. Guardians on their new mission won’t be accompanied by Peter Quill. He’s been replaced as a team leader by Groot.

Star-Lord gave the impression of being the only remaining Guardian who survived the Infinity Wars event unscathed. This all actually started with the Guardians of the Galaxy #1.

Sure, he had been murdered by Gamora, the woman he loved, then brought back to life to see her defeated and scattered to an unknown corner of the universe. But at least he wasn’t going full punk rock like Groot.

The new Guardians team held a mutiny to remove the drunken, depressed Quill from his captaincy. Groot, the new Guardians leader, is now ready so to take The Ryder from him to go after Gamora.

They hope to save her from the Dark Guardians led by Thanos’ brother, a cosmic hit squad that is hunting her down. But they get much more than they bargained for when they land on Rocket’s home planet to find an ambush fast approaching.

Highlights from Vol. #4

In the last few pages of Guardians of the Galaxy #4 the hit squad attacks and Nebula threatens Peter’s life. Gamora shoots at her adopted sister to save him, despite the fact that she killed him herself not long ago.

Gamora makes herself an even bigger target to the heavy hitter of the Dark Guardians, Gladiator by indulging in fights.

The heroes’ efforts to save their friend’s life seems to have been a total failure. As Gamora knocks down Nebula who prepares to give the finishing blow.

But what nobody saw coming was Star-Lord jumping in the way to save her. Even after her betrayal. He lays down his life to save the woman he loves and would take a killing blow for Gamora, also he fittingly answers “I don’t know anything anymore.”

The same line he used earlier in the issue to demonstrate just how lost Star-Lord had become without his family.

If the cover of Guardians of the Galaxy #5 is any indication, Hela, the Asgardian Goddess of Death, might have a hand in bringing Star-Lord back. It’s hard to assume if they simply sacrifice Peter for the good of the universe.

We are sure to get some of these answers in the next two books of the series, as “The Final Gauntlet” comes to an end.
