Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 20 Recap
In the previous episode, we got peeks into the big moments of Grisha’s life. Right from the moment Eren is born, we saw how Grisha cherished his son and loved him, which made Zeke very jealous and bitter. It was obvious that Grisha had learned of his mistakes from his bad parenting with his first son and was making amends.
However, he was still looking for ways to fulfill his mission by using his status as a doctor to get more info about the Royal family. Zeke told Eren that this proves how selfish Grisha was as a father by putting his family at risk like the last time.
When Grisha found the real Royal Family’s hiding place, he could not bring himself to complete his mission of stealing the Founding Titan. After this, he went and hugged Eren out of love and helplessness because he realized how weak he was in coming to a decision.
This was one of the points where we realized that he had become a different father who prioritized his child’s well-being. But when we go back towards the events in the first episode of Attack on Titan, we get a much better perspective since Grisha’s experience of the event is included too.
After Eren declares his wish to become a Survey Corps member and proclaims his desire to get freedom, Grisha realizes that he has a mission to fulfill, a mission that he promised Kruger and his Eldia Restorationists. That very day after he hears that the walls have been breached, he confronts the entire Reiss family.

After he requests Freida Reiss to fight for Eldia and wipe out the Titans unsuccessfully, he decides to transform into a Titan. However, at the thought of murdering innocent little children, he stops from doing so.
At that very crucial moment, Eren Yeager appears and influences his father’s decision directly from the future, which may be a unique ability of the Founding Titan. He reminds his father about the hardships he has had to undergo because of the Marleyans and the passivity of the Founding Titan. His sister, his wife Carla, his comrades.
Then, in a moment of pure rage, he transforms, eats Freida, and crushes the remaining Reiss family members to death. After this, he cries out in horror realizing how horrible his actions were. He then sees the future Zeke and hugs him while profusely apologizing for his past actions. In a heartbreaking scene, Zeke can be seen shedding tears.
